Catch the Reading Bug 2008!

CATCH THE READING BUG
2008 Summer Reading Program

Dear Reading Bugs,

It is time to visit the Reading Garden at the Richmond Memorial Library where you will be surrounded by huge bugs, flowers, and other growing things. Swarm to the Children’s Room starting June 23 - August 15 to sign up for this year’s Summer Reading Program. All age levels may participate – babies, teens, and adults. Children will blossom as they read the summer away. When they have completed 600 minutes ( 5 days/week for 15 minutes/day for 8 weeks) they will get a key to “The Secret Garden” where they may select a prize.

Children will receive a reading record on which to keep track of their minutes. Parents must initial each space that represents a 15 minute time period. Bring the reading record to the library to get buggy stickers to cover the initialed blocks. Incentives may be collected by searching for the food of the week. Ants will make their way to the picnic basket after each food is collected.

At the end of the summer prize baskets will be given to 20 lucky winners. Children will receive a raffle ticket for each visit to the library. Additional tickets can be earned by reading more than 600 minutes or by spinning the flower wheel. The flower wheel gives directions for special activities such as - listen to a book on CD or read a non-fiction book about insects. An extra ticket will be given for each activity completed.

Additional programs will be held during July and August. In an effort to make the program more age appropriate, programs will be divided by age level.

The Busy Bees (preschoolers) will meet for stories, crafts, and snacks Friday mornings at 10 am.

The Frisky Fireflies (those entering grades 1-3) will meet Fridays at 2:30 pm for a variety of activities.

The Dragonflies (those entering grades 3, 4 and 5) will attend the lunch bunch book discussion program on Tuesdays at 1:00pm. Bring your own lunch and a blanket and we’ll provide the drink and snack.

In families where children fall into more than one age level, they may select one program to attend. However, it is highly suggested that only third through fifth graders become Daring Dragonflies due to the reading level of the books and the difficulty of the activities presented during the program. There is more flexibility in the other two programs to accommodate a wider audience age range.

A “Pizza Party with Stellaluna” will end the program. Everyone active in the Children’s Program should try to attend. Stellaluna the Bat will distribute certificates to those who have completed 600 minutes of reading. Also, the raffle baskets will be given away at this time.

Buzzing with anticipation,
The Children’s Room Staff: Sandy Gillard, Kelly March & Katie Elia
